Homeless Teen Mom Valedictorian

It is the kind of story that makes strong women weep and all of us have hope. Chicago can be a tough city to grow up in, cold and heartless for many. For Trameka Pope and her mom it had the extra pain of being a city where they were once homeless. It was a hard life for the two and to add to the difficulties, Trameka became pregnant and had a baby girl the summer before she began high school. Some would say the odds were against her even graduating high school. But Pope didn’t want to become just another statistic and her drive and determination is the story behind this remarkable tale of redemption.

Homeless Teen Mom Valedictorian And Scholar

She told interviewers that her baby girl was her inspiration to do well in school and it turns out that she succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. She was a cheerleader for Wendell Phillip High School’s football team, she worked hard to make it into college prep and advanced placement courses in school and she also held down a part time job at a local supermarket. All the while she cared for her adorable little girl and even applied for scholarships. That extra last effort paid off, for she has received a little over $600,000 in scholarships that will help her to attend Western Illinois University this fall. Is it any wonder that her school chose her to be the valedictorian for this year’s graduates? With an example such as this, every student should feel that the sky is the limit for them. I think we will be hearing big things from this young woman, as she begins her studies at university. One thing is for certain, it will take much more than being homeless and pregnant to stop Trameka Pope from succeeding!
