Family Diet Tips: Cutting Sugar and Salt

Cutting Down Sugar and Salt From Your Family Diet

Family Diet

There’s no secret that using too much salt and sugar in your diet can damage your families health, but more importantly, as a family the weight will add up faster than anything. Reducing the amount of salt intake can be quite a difficult task, but it’s possible without feeling your missing out any of your favorite ingredients. Here are some simple ways to help you steer away from salt and sugar but not leave the flavor out.

Family Diet Tips: Wash Away Salt

Anytime you serve canned vegetables at dinner, make sure you rinse these under cold water and place them into a colander. Just by rinsing these canned veggies, you are reducing the amount of salt by 40 percent. This means you should rinse anything in a can that would contain salt.

Family Diet Tips: Add Your Seasoning While You Cook

When you roast those delicious veggies, toss them with a few tablespoons of canola or olive oil; add some fresh lemon and a pinch of salt and pepper. Just by adding your salt when cooking, limits the amount that you’ll add when you do sit down and eat your meal.

Family Diet Tips: Add Thyme

Just by adding thyme to such things as scrambled eggs, you’ll not be tempted to add salt after they are done cooking. Thyme adds natural flavor to most things without adding the salt.

Cut Back On Taco Seasoning

When Taco Tuesday comes around, limit the amount of taco seasoning you add to your ground beef. Use only half of the packet, then improvise the rest with some chili powder, ground cumin, and onion powder.

Family Diet Tips: Make Your Own Spaghetti Sauce

Making your own spaghetti sauce will not only cut back on the amount of sugar and salt, but it will also taste better too. You can even take the jar of spaghetti sauce and add in your favorite canned tomatoes.

Family Diet Tips: Naturally Sweeten

Instead of using sugar to sweeten oatmeal or cereals, add dried blueberries or cranberries. Also, adding cinnamon to your breakfast cereal will make it taste a whole lot better.

Family Diet Tips: Fruit Syrup

If your kids love syrup, they’ll love this alternative. Mix 1 cup of their favorite berries with 1 tsp. of cinnamon and cook till it thickens. Add this over any sort of pancakes or things that you use syrup on.
