Why Millennial Parenting Challenges Are Different

Millennial Parenting

While for many, today’s world may seem like a time of riches, the millennial parenting challenges are both complex and unique. There is a good reason many of today’s young couple are putting off the trial of being parents. Researchers are showing that today’s millennial generation is putting off parenthood in droves, delaying it more than any other generation. But parenting skills remain the same, you may be thinking. True, but the tools offered and the cost of parenting has risen dramatically. Many think this may be why millennial parenting challenges are so high.

Financial Millennial Parenting Challenges

While the cost of food and housing may have gone down for many of today’s young wage earners, parenting has not. In today’s world many young parents want to spend time with their kids, but with both of them heading out for work each day that may be a tough goal to achieve. The rising cost of child care makes the choice of one parent staying home with the kids a challenge, though embraced more as wages stagnate. The days of latchkey kids or leaving them with the grandparents is just not within reach for many. For Millennial parents the answer can be staggered jobs with at least one parent working the night shift. The other option is to put off saving for a child’s college while that money, which can be as much as $12,300 a year in places like New York, is spent on child care instead. But this leaves playing catch-up later, and wages are not helping for many.

Millennial Parents and Poverty

One of the most disturbing statistics is that this generation, one with more college graduates than any other, is also the poorest. The education may be there but the jobs aren’t. One in five millennial parents live below the poverty level in the U.S. according to the latest census. With the challenges of time, student loans, and increased child care costs, is it any wonder that the millennial parenting challenges are overwhelming our next generation of parents? These are not the same challenges their parents or even their grandparents faced, and they know it.
