The Cop And The Graduating Teen – A Story Of Sadness And Hope

High school graduation should have been a day of celebration for young Kazzie Portie. But instead he looked forward to it with immense sorrow after having lost both his parents in an auto accident just a week before. The youngest of five kids and the last one still at home, Kazzie knew his parents had been excited by his upcoming graduation day. The devastating news was delivered to him, home alone, by Lieutenant Eric Ellison. When the boy mentioned he was graduating the following week, the officer told him he would attend. He felt it was the right thing to do. The cop and the graduating teen went their separate ways; Kazzie remaining dazed in the pain and getting ready for a painful graduation.

The Cop And The Graduating Teen Meet Again

The day of graduation dawned and Kazzie could think of little besides the fact his parents would not be there with him. He didn’t expect to see the officer who had brought him the shocking news at his graduation ceremony, but Lt. Ellison was there. In fact, he was the first person to hug him in congratulation on stage. The touching moment, including the standing ovation from the rest of his graduating class can be seen in this video on brother Blake Henning’s Facebook page.

Telling The Other Cop Story

With all of the dark stories of cops and kids we see each day, this was a truly touching tale. Lt. Ellison simply states that he did what he would hope others would do for his own daughters. He says that the real hero of the hour here is Kazzie. The young man has vowed he is “not going to use all this an excuse to go down a bad road. I’m using this as an excuse to make my parents proud.” We all echo Lt. Ellison’s message when he said, “God Speed Kaz, You’ve got a great future ahead of you.” Amen to that, officer.
