Starbucks College Tuition – A Smart Choice for Parents?

Should parents be embracing Starbucks as the job of choice when their kids want to work first and go to college later? They could when it includes the new Starbucks college tuition perk.  A new program from Starbucks that actually pays the tuition at Arizona State University’s online college for four years may be the deal maker for low income parents. If the price of college has skyrocketed out of your budget’s reach, maybe the coffee kingdom isn’t a bad choice.

Starbucks College Tuition Free

The Starbucks college tuition program is just one example of how the company has been working hard to attract bright young people to the business. The offer is only for those “partners” (how Starbucks refers to its employees) who work at least 20 hours a week. For working kids who did well in high school but can’t see finding the $30,000 a year for tuition to even a small university like Arizona State, this could be the magic ingredient. The university gives Starbucks a discount that is roughly half the tuition and Starbucks covers the rest. So a smart kid with the drive to work 20 hours a week and apply themselves to an online school after work could emerge in four years with an actual degree.

No Strings Attached

You would expect a program like this to require employees to stay with the company for a minimum number of years once they complete the degree, but not according to the company CEO Howard Schultz. He has stated that “Everyone deserves a chance at the American Dream,” and that once they complete their degree they are not obliged to stay with Starbucks. The company foretells 25,000 employees taking advantage of the Starbucks college tuition program in the next ten years. Perhaps your kid will be the next barista with a four year degree to help him move on with his dream.
