Same Sex Marriage Parents

same sex coupleOn June 26, 2015 the United States Supreme Court ruled that marriage is legal in all 50 states. One of the issues which was addressed in the majority opinion written by Justice Anthony Kennedy was the effect gay marriage has on children.

US News quoted Justice Kennedy’s opinion, “Without the recognition, stability and predictability marriage offers, children suffer the stigma of knowing their families are somehow lesser. They also suffer the significant material costs of being raised by unmarried parents, relegated to a more difficult and uncertain family life. The marriage laws at issue thus harm and humiliate the children of same-sex couples.”

The Colorado Springs Independent released a study recently from the University of Colorado-Denver which found that, “Scientists agree that children of same-sex parents experience ‘no difference’ on a range of social and behavioral outcomes compared to children of heterosexual or single parents.”

While this study is recent the information isn’t actually “new.” The issue has been looked at many times in the last few decades. Social scientists started to reach a scientific consensus as early as 1990 that there are no differences in children which have been raised by same-sex couples versus the “traditional” hetero-sexual couple. On ThinkProgress, the issue is very carefully looked, specifically from a historical aspect.

Lead researcher Jimi Adams is quoted saying, “Perhaps the most glaring gap is how few of the kids in these studies are from married same-sex homes,” he suspects, however, that children growing up in homes where their same-sex parents are legally allowed to marry will only confirm what the studies have shown this far, and possibly even reveal some benefits as well.
