Parents Outraged, Say School Drill Went Too Far

School Drill Went Too Far

Both the media and the parents of students at a Worland school are saying that a school drill went too far when they left kids scared and in tears. The drill, meant to simulate a situation where the school had to deal with a violent intruder, had many of the kids at the school traumatized and the parents up in arms. Many are now asking why the school decided to go ahead when it should have been obvious that a school drill went too far by making the invasion feel like a real threat.

Parents Say School Drill Went Too Far in Being Realistic

Part of the problem, according to many parents, is that the school made the drill so realistic that the kids were frightened and even said “I don’t want to die!” at the time. In addition, although the school said that they had sent the parents an email letting them know the school planned to do a “low level drill”, many parents say they never saw the email. As many experts have pointed out, to create a drill of this kind is traumatizing. Kids should have been sent home with a consent form that the parents would sign. Without such a form, and discussion about the drill with the students,  the drill should never have been done.

Should This School Have Gone Ahead?

So are schools in the right to create scary situations for their students in order to prepare them for the worst? Or are parents right in saying that the school drill went too far when they chose to make it seem as realistic as possible? Are our schools so under siege that parents no longer have a say in what kind of trauma their kids are exposed to at school? That is the big question being raised across the nation as this action is discussed.
