Local officials have taken custody of the ten kids of off the grid parents for a variety of charges including neglect. The family lived in what they referred to as a “tiny house”, a self-constructed 280 square foot building without running water or electricity. The ten kids, ranging in age from 3 months to 15 years old were taken into protective custody. Joe and Nicole Naugler, who are expecting their eleventh child in a few months, will continue to fight to regain custody of the children removed from their home.

Off The Grid Parents Blogged And Posted

While they may have been living in a simple home without running water or electricity, they did have a well, septic tank and generator that allows some powered elements in the home. The proof of having power is in the fact that the couple has had a blog up since they started living simply and a Facebook page that detailed their rural simple lifestyle. Of course, the Facebook page has been filled with details about the children’s seizure by the government ever since that began. The support of the page has grown tremendously. As stated by both the parents and those who knew them, the kids were happy and healthy, enjoying their simple pleasures and in no danger.

Back To The Basics Living

The Naugler family has long espoused the idea of returning to a simpler lifestyle. Their choices as off the grid parents were based in their religious beliefs. Their homesteading was well documented to show the steps they took along the way. The parents have been sending messages of love to their children in custody as they fight to regain control of their kids. The courts have granted temporary custody to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) while the government continues its investigation. The CHFS acted on an anonymous police complaint that the couple have stated in their Facebook page came from their estranged 19 year-old son. It remains to be seen if the children will be reunited with their parents in the end.
