Celebrating The First Day Of Spring With Your Kids

first day of spring

It may not look like it outside your window, but March 20th was the first day of spring. Yes, there are predications of yet more of that cold white stuff for some of the country, but that doesn’t stop spring from coming. Of course, with it comes the warmer weather. Your kids in galoshes will be splashing through rain puddles and all the other fun events that the first day of spring portends. Getting out with your kids will be a great way to help them celebrate the new season. Here are a few ideas of ways you can get your kids interested in spring and all its gifts.

Hunting for Flowers in Urban Gardens

If you live in the city, a walk through some of the municipal gardens will yield early glimpses of the first day of spring. Why not borrow a book from the library that identifies local spring flowers and take a walk to see what has pushed through the soil? If you can’t find a book, you can always find an app for your smartphone that will help you with the identification. You can make it a contest with the kids to see who can identify the largest number of plants.

Getting A Garden Started

This is also a good time to teach your kids about gardening. Why not head out to the local nursery and have them pick out the vegetables they want to grow? For the little ones, carrots and radishes are the best bet. They are fast to grow and easy to care for. Best of all, the kids will love to eat what they have seen grow in their own garden.

First Day Of Spring Kids Activities

Unfortunately the weather may not always cooperate. If you are looking for fun things to do with the kids that are more of an indoor craft, Pinterest is a good place to begin your search. I am always amazed with how many wonderful craft projects I find for the kids on Pinterest. A few pages I have found to be really helpful are this one on Kids Spring Activities and this one on Kids Spring and Summer Fun. Pinterest isn’t just fun for pinning; it is also a great resource for busy moms!

So get those kids out from in front of that computer screen and take them out of doors. With the first day of spring officially here, it will not be long before they are asking to stay out one hour longer. Let’s encourage them all we can to get out and enjoy the first day of spring and spring weather.
