5 Steps to Prepare Your Babysitter

ID-100109912

Leaving your child with a babysitter for the first time can be nerve-wracking. You may second-guess yourself half a dozen times before you actually walk out the door. However, one way to make yourself feel more confident with the decision is by taking the time to prepare your babysitter fully before leaving.

  1. Have an emergency list of contacts: This should include things like phone numbers, poison control, fire department, local hospital and any other numbers you think may be relevant.
  2. Keep important paperwork in one place: Medical information, prescriptions taken, insurance documents, should all be kept in one place. They should be easy to access and take with them in case of an emergency.
  3. Include a list of your child’s favorite things: What does your child like to eat? What do they like to play? Do they have a favorite toy or blanket? Share these with your babysitter.
  4. Go over things that they are not allowed to do: Is eating in the living room a no-no? What about video games or certain TV shows? Your babysitter will not know these things unless you share them ahead of time.
  5. Share calming and bedtime routines and techniques: Does your child like to be rocked to sleep?  Is there a song that they like to listen to while dozing off?  What calms them down when they are upset?  Knowing these things will help prepare your babysitter to better care for your child.

Leaving your child with a sitter that is fully prepared for the task will help you be more confident in their abilities. Taking the time to prepare your babysitter will help her fully understand your child, and will help your child know who is in charge, and that they are going to be well taken care of.
