3 Parenting Mistakes You Can Stop Now

lecturing parents

Just like you and me, every parent wants their child to be happy, confident, and an overall well-rounded person. However, just like kids, parents can make mistakes. Over the years, our society has focused on finding out what hurts and what helps our children to develop. Isn’t it time we do something valuable with that information rather than sticking to traditions?  I certainly think so.  Here are three things many parents do, but shouldn’t.

1. Ignore Your Own Behavior

Many parents and children alike are familiar with the saying “Do as I say, not as I do“. Unfortunately this doesn’t work when raising children, because most kids learn by example. Young children are like a sponge. They absorb everything around them, both the good and the bad. Remember, don’t tell your child how to act and behave, show them.

2. Think Parenting Is the Same for Every Child

Unlike clothing, one size does not fit all when it comes to parenting. What works for your first born child may or may not work for your second. Every child is different, and as such, your parenting aspects should relate to the child you are raising.

3. Talk to Your Child, Don’t Scold.

One of the biggest mistakes parents make is in punishing their child. Yes, your child acted out. However, children need to be able to express their feelings. By punishing them, they may take this as emotions being something bad. Make sure to talk with your child. Let them know it is okay to be angry or upset, but also make sure they are aware hitting or throwing things is not acceptable. This way your child will learn it’s okay to have emotions, but they need to make sure to express it in the right way.
