  1. Be realistic about the value of what you’re saving.

It starts with their medical bracelet from the hospital. And it becomes a mountain. I’ve had the recent experience of sorting through (and throwing away most of) all the things my mother saved for me over the years. Soccer shirts from leagues I don’t remember. Stuffed animals. Aged baby linens. Hair clippings. Most of the stuff we mothers save hoping it will be meaningful for someone else– isn’t. Your daughter is just not going to wear your wedding dress. Your kids are probably not going to play with your old toys or wear your old clothes.
